The Sunny South and Vitamin D Deficiency 28.04.2008
Bicycling and gardening are two of my favorite activities. As I love outdoor activities, I can’t avoid sun. I consult a dermatologist to check my skin before two years.
No suspicious spots were found during the check-up and the doctor praised me for the regular usage of sunscreen. Only thing which was found suspicious during the check-up was the increased level of vitamin D. I have a high level of vitamin D which was obtained from my daily calcium supplements and multivitamin. The doctor advised to take the multivitamin every other day.
In the fall of 2007, I consult with my regular doctor and he suggested for a test. After the test, it was found that there is a decrease in bone density. My regular doctor referred me to a rheumatologist for a detailed check-up and to check whether I have to take any medication to ensure healthy bones. The rheumatologist sent my blood samples for a thorough examination. When the result came, it was shocking for me because I was deficient in vitamin D. The body can’t metabolize calcium without sufficient amount of vitamin D.
The doctor laughed when I told him the story of avoiding the calcium supplements and multivitamin. Once, doctors thought that Floridians have plenty of vitamin D because most of them love to be in outdoors year-round. Nowadays, more and more Floridians have vitamin D deficiency. The doctor suggested a heavy dose of vitamin D for six weeks and told me to continue the daily multivitamin. The doctor also suggested returning for a follow-up in January.
The good news is that I have retained my vitamin D and it is not needed to take any bone medication for now. I have to check the bone density again in two years time. Until then, there is no problem for biking, continuing my activities and taking calcium and vitamin supplements.
