Fail not Your Vitamins, Find the Right Home for them
19.02.2008

Survey reveals that healthcare professionals prefer to store their vitamins and other supplements in the kitchen cabinet!

The survey was conducted by the "Life Supplemented" Healthcare Professionals (HCP) to evaluate the personal attitudes and use of dietary supplements by healthcare professionals. The preferred location for doctors and nurses to store their vitamins is the kitchen cabinet, according to the survey. Fifty-nine percent of doctors and sixty-six percent of nurses find kitchen cabinet more convenient than other household locations. The second most preferred location to shelve supplements is the bathroom cabinet for 25% of doctors and 27% of nurses.

Keeping the supplements in the kitchen makes you associate them with meals and you are more likely to remember to take them. Also, it reduces the chances of your taking them on an empty stomach.

Bathroom cabinets are certainly not the ideal place to shelve your vitamins, even though many people prefer to store them there. Humidity from the shower and the sink is likely to accelerate the degradation of vitamins, rendering them ineffective in the long run. Heat and light can degenerate the components of the vitamins. Exposure to bright lights and heat can also spoil your vitamins.

The study found that 72% of all doctors and 89% of all nurses take dietary supplements. Also, 79% of doctors and 82% of nurses prescribe dietary supplements to their patients. "Life supplemented" campaign provides several tips on how to store your supplements:

  • Store them in a cool, dry place away from bright light, heat and stream.
  • Keep the supplements away from the reach of children.
  • Store them in a place that you frequent - that will remind you to take them regularly.
  • It is a good idea to take the supplements with meal or a short time after food.
  • It is convenient to keep them near your preferred eating location.
  • Vitamin bottles can often be hidden behind other bottles or other items in the cabinet so that you will forget about them. Do not forget to check the expiration dates periodically. Discard the expired ones and get new ones.
